My Mom had knee replacement surgery yesterday, I am in my hometown taking care of her for a couple of weeks. I am staying at her house while I am here. She has a cat named Emmy and everytime I pet the cat it rolls over on it’s back and grabs my hand like it is going to bite me. It doesn’t bite down though it just puts it’s teeth on my finger and then starts licking my finger. It’s the weirdest thing I have ever seen an animal do.

BTW: Sunday I will be 45 minutes from the Power tour stop in Champaign, IL, unfortunately I won’t be able to get up there.

She’s rubbing her gums on you, putting her scent on you. It’s a sign of love.

There’s a very good reason for that, actually.
Because cats.

That means she likes you. She’s just playing with you.

I’ve never had a cat, but they are something else. I hope your mom has a speedy recovery!

I don’t know if she likes me, or if it’s because I am the the only human in the house.

Yeah. My cat does it all the time. It’s basically letting other cats know “Back off, he’s (she’s) mine.”

We had them when I was young but, I can’t bring myself to get one now. There is something about having a box of kitty litter/poop in my house that I can’t get over.
Thanks, the recovery is going great so far, she was up walking around today with a walker and the doctors seem pretty confident.

Cute cat. I always thought the opening scene in noir film The Long Goodbye perfectly sums up the dysfunctional relationship between humans and their cats.

Her paws have scent glands too

And cheeks. I absolutely love it when my cat rubs her cheeks on me. Damn I miss my cat so much. Luckily I get her back later this month!

I have 3 cats in my house. 1 was mine and 2 were my gf’s, then we moved in together.
Some cats will accept petting from any willing human. Others are more selective about it. But their bellies are always a sensitive spot so allowing you to pet the belly is a sign of trust. Same thing with licking.
My cat just so happens to be on the couch next to me. He’s a sucker for belly rubs and trusts me completely. Observe.

You’re lucky. My neighbors cat does the same thing except it puts its claws in your hand and then bites hard. Only happened once though because I won’t let that cat get anywhere near me now.

Sorry but fuck cats. They hate humans only reason they are around you is because they are smart and figured out that humans can give them an easy meal. Cats are opportunist. Hmm I guess they are oppos.

Cute kitty. Our cat used to do that when he wanted to play. Now he’s old and lazy, so not so much anymore.

“I shall lay here while you rub me.”
We used to have Siamese cats when I was a kid. They were all bitchy.

I lived with cats most of my life. This doesn’t even come close to some of the wierd things they do. Despite sometimes being the biggest douches on the planet, I still love petting cats.
I’ve also had to do other fun things like fetch them out of trees, have one that was such a pain he got into the garbage and ate a tin foil (thankfully puked it back up and didn’t have to have surgery).
But all in all they are good companions I think, a lot more independent than dogs which is what I like.

Did your guys cats get along? Anytime I have had two full grown cats in the house that weren’t raised together it never works out. To introduce once cat to the other I have found you usually need to get the 2nd one as a kitten because then big ol tom cat don’t see it as a threat.

The first 17 years of my life our house was filled with animals, I think the highest we ever got was 4 cats, 3 dogs, 2 gerbils and some fish. It worked though because I grew up in a huge old Victorian house. I am not 100 percent sure but I think counting the basement and attic it was pushing 4000 sq ft.
I just haven’t been around them regularly in years. I want one but I can’t do the box of poop/kitty litter in the house thing.

Yup that is never pleasant although dogs aren’t much better. I have never aspired to own gerbils or any type of rodents or lizards. I like lizards, I just don’t want to own one.

There was an adjustment period but now they’re cool with each other.
My cat, Oliver, is a big Siamese fixed male. He’s super chill most of the time. Follows me around everywhere. Big softie and just wants to be loved.
Hers are two black-n-white females that are mother & daughter, Sophia & Jade. Jade is the more territorial of the two and took longer to get used to Oliver.
When I moved in, we did a gradual introduction. First we kept Oliver in the guest room, then we opened the door but put a baby gate in the doorway, then let Oliver out to roam the house for little chunks of time. Eventually we took out the baby gate and let everyone get to know each other.
After everyone had full run of the house, Jade did a bunch of hissing at Oliver if he got too close, but he was really just trying to make friends and eventually won her over.
I really think it worked out so well because of how well behaved and even keeled Oliver is. He was able to come in and let the girls get used to him slowly while not upsetting them.
He is of course, the best cat ever.
